Course

A Course in qoda.ly is a timing designation for Items that helps orchestrate the flow of dishes throughout a customer’s meal. It ensures the kitchen prepares and serves food in the intended sequence, enhancing the dining experience.

How Courses work

  • Default assignment: each Menu Item can have a default Course (e.g., “Appetizer,” “Main,” “Dessert”). This is set up during initial menu configuration.
  • Waiter overrides: when taking an order, waiters have the flexibility to override an item’s default Course if requested by the customer.
  • Kitchen coordination: Kitchen tickets or displays prominently group and order items by their Course. This provides the kitchen staff with a clear roadmap of what to prepare and when.
  • ASAP Items: items without an assigned default Course are intended to be prepared and served as soon as possible. This is often used for drinks or other items intended to arrive quickly.

Example Courses

While Course names can be customized to fit your restaurant’s style, here are some common ones:

  • Appetizer: dishes served at the start of the meal.
  • Main: the principal dish(es) of the meal.
  • Sides: accompaniments to the Main.
  • Dessert: sweet dishes to conclude the meal.

Best practices

  • Logical structure: create a Course structure that matches your restaurant’s service style (casual, fine dining, etc.).
  • Clear communication: ensure waiters understand how to use and override Courses within qoda.ly.
  • Kitchen coordination: work with your kitchen team to optimize how Course information is displayed to streamline their workflow.
